What Approach is Best for Me?
The type of approach that would be best for you depends on what you would like to accomplish. We will work together to determine what is the best approach for you.
Counseling
Counseling is a short-term, solution-focused approach to solving problems. Your counselor works with you to help clarify your situation, set realistic goals, and develop problem solving and coping strategies. Counseling is most appropriate for you if you are looking for a shorter-term, action-oriented approach to help find concrete solutions to specific problems.
psychotherapy
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a longer-term, more in-depth approach. Instead of simply solving identified problems, Psychotherapy will also look behind these problems, and help clarify your feelings and beliefs about them. Psychotherapy is a process which can help you gain more knowledge and awareness of your inner thoughts, feelings, behaviors and beliefs – “what makes you tick.” The Psychotherapy process is focused on helping you know more about yourself, and learn constructive ways to deal with your feelings and reactions. This knowledge can ultimately help you heal, feel more in control of your life, and live in a way which feels much more fulfilling and meaningful. Psychotherapy is most appropriate for you if you want to explore your issues on a deeper level.
Life Coaching
Life Coaching helps you identify and achieve personal and professional goals. It is a process based on your identified interests and objectives – you take action, and your coach assists and facilitates. Your coach helps you set and reach goals, helps you take action to develop your talent and potential, and helps you move toward the realization of your dreams and aspirations. Life Coaching is different from Counseling or Psychotherapy because it doesn’t focus on examining the past; the coaching process maintains a focus on today and your future. Your life coach becomes a catalyst who helps you capitalize on your strengths, overcome barriers, and proactively set and achieve reachable goals. Your Coach is someone who is there at your side, in an unbiased way, to encourage you all along your journey. Coaching can help you move from where you are to where you want to be!
Energy Psychology
Energy Psychology (EP) directly addresses the body’s energy system in a variety of ways. This group of approaches includes EFT Tapping, which addresses the body’s Meridian system (see EFT Tapping link below), subtle energy centers (commonly known as Chakras), as well as the body’s energetic Biofield. Energy Psychology focuses on the relationships between thoughts, emotions, sensations, behaviors and energy. Therapeutically, these highly effective, evidence-supported approaches are thought to be very helpful in identifying and resolving energy blockages so that our naturally occurring energy can flow more freely. When our energy systems are flowing more freely, all of our internal systems are able to function more effectively, and our thoughts and feelings can be brought into greater alignment and flow, increasing our sense of health and well-being. These approaches are increasingly evidence-supported in scientific studies to be effective in working with many issues, including stress reduction, anxiety, phobias, trauma and PTSD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, food cravings and depression. EFT Tapping
EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques), the most commonly known form of energy psychology, is a focused, evidence-supported treatment that directly addresses the body’s energy system using acupoint tapping, combined with elements of both cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. This method is believed to help correct energetic blocks, and it is often reported to help people achieve an enhanced sense of well-being. Clinical experience and an ever-increasing number of scientific studies are confirming that this approach can effectively assist in addressing conditions such as anxiety, phobias, traumatic responses, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, food cravings and depression, and can also assist with stress reduction, relaxation, an enhanced sense of well-being, and reduction of pain sensations. Clinical EFT Tapping may be provided by an experienced practitioner following specific clinical protocols, and in conjunction with this, can also be learned and used by anyone as a self-help tool at home to enhance wellness on an ongoing basis. (Learn more about EFT Tapping at: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov and www.sciencedirect.com). David S. Kessler, LCSW, DCEP is a certified Diplomate of Comprehensive Energy Psychology.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be utilized to help people access the power of their unconscious minds to help with many issues including anxiety, depression, stress, pain management, habit control, PTSD and many other psychological and physical problems.
David practices Ericksonian hypnotherapy, which is highly individualized and collaborative rather than the traditionally more directive approach that is most commonly known. It is a gentle, organic process in which people connect with their own inner resources to achieve whatever goals they wish to achieve. (Learn more about Hypnotherapy at: www.nyseph.org). David S. Kessler, LCSW, CHt is a Certified Hypnotherapist.
